This tour project is to navigate visitors through the Shing Mun Redoubt, Hong Kong, a defensive position that was part of the Gin Drinkers Line built by the British before WWII. In the Battle of Hong Kong, the Redoubt saw brief fighting before it was taken by the Imperial Japanese Army on 10 December, 1941.

This mobile tour provides a sample route which guides the visitors through the war ruins. The tour has 11 stops. Each stop provides basic information of the historical site.

During the battle, PB 402 and the machine gun position pinned the Japanese down and inflicted some casualty. But this drew the attention of the Japanese and the PB was eventaully captured.

\n\n $\"PB401B\"$ \n\nThe straight vents at the rear top of the structure were the air vents. The air vents were designed to exhaust the smoke of the machine guns. They were concrete part pre-made in the factory and inserted instantly on the structure.\n

\n\nOriginally a roof was placed at the top of all the PBs. There was also a wall at the front. They were however destroyed by the Royal Engineers in the late 1950s after the Redoubt was long decommissioned.\n\n

Location of PBs 401 AB\n\n $\"PB$ \n\n PBs 401AB guarded the newly constructed Dam (1935) of the Shing Mun Reservoir. Unfortunately, the Japanese troops easily passed through the unwired dam on the night of 9 Dec without being spotted. The defenders of PBs 401 AB only started firing at the advancing Japanese troops after they were notified of the attack. \n\n

\n\n The defenders in PB 401B locked themselves inside and fought until morning. However, while besieging PB 401B, the Japanese troops discovered the air shafts at the back of PB 401A. Consequently, they threw in grenades through the shafts and quickly captured the PB. \n\n

You may go to PB 401A through the path at the right. The condition of PB 401A however is not as good as PB 401B.

Firing steps

\n $\"firingsteps\"$ \nThe firing steps are designed to provide cover for soldiers to fire within the trench. Back in 1938, the hills were almost bare, the soldiers could easily shoot at the enemy down the slope.\n\n

See below the historical footage of military drill at the Shing Mun Redoubt. You can see how the Indian soldiers of the Rajputana Rifles used the firing steps. (4:11) The vegetation was sparse at the time and the air shafts on the ground can been seen easily.\n\n
